Long Arm Quilting and Ms. Lou Lou the Kitten

These jewels are going to the long arm quilter this week to be quilted  and back to me hopefully by December 1st.
“Off the Wall Nine Patch” is made from a fat quarter medley I purchased sometime ago from a online quilt shop. I think this pattern does a good job of showcasing the Red Ware Revisited  fabric  by ChanteClarie .  I am very happy with the quilt but it looks much better than this photo.  The fabric reminds me of the Pennsylvania Dutch county I love visiting especially the restaurants
100_1365

“The States” Block of Month was  2013 project of my quilt guild.  I plan to exhibit this  quilt  at our Christmas party this year. This one also uses a fat quarter medley called
Floral Trails by Moda.

These kick off several of my summer finishes in a big way.

A few pictures of my newest family member Ms Lou Lou. adopted from my vetinary.

Modern Scrappy Triangle String Block

I am making 16 of these scrappy triangle string blocks.  I saw the tutorial  here and here . If you want to try making these I’ve included a few easy steps.

I like to cut my strips between 2 to 3 inches wide.
100_1130
Sew enough strips together to get about a 13 x 13 inch block. You will need two of these.
100_1128
Press strips and trim to  12.5 x 12.5 blocks
100_1135
Place right sides together and pin strips together with one strip running horizontally and the other running vertically.
100_1138
Sew a scant 1/4 seam allowance around the entire block.
100_1139
Cut blocks  twice on the diagonal corner to corner.  You will have 4 smaller blocks now.

100_1143

Decide which way you want to arrange your blocks and sew together. This
makes a lovely block.  I plan to frame each of my blocks with a 2 to 3 inch strip of a neutral color fabric. Remember since you are cutting your squares on the diagonal you will get some bias distortion. Spraying the block with a little starch when you press helps.
My finished block.

Have a wonderful week.

My10 Quilty Secrets

10 quilty secrets
Amy , the blogger at 13 spools   did a post on 10 Quilt Secrets  and boy did it go over big .  A lot of bloggers followed her lead and posted their quilt secrets too. WELL confession is good for the soul and here are my 10 Quilty Secrets.
1.  I am proud to say that I only have about 12 UFO’s that I need to finish.
2 .  I have in the past had my used rotary cutter blades re- sharpened.
3 .  I really wanted this gadget, the Quilter’s FabriCalc  that I have yet to use.
4 . I am  getting better at switching out my sewing machine needles.
5 .  I love shopping for new fabric if it is for a special quilt project.
6 .  Sometimes I will use pretty sheets as backing for my quilts.
7.   I prefer not to work with small fabrics pieces.
8 .  I like the quality of Gutermann thread.
9.  The part that worries me the most about my quilting is the binding, I want it perfect.
10. Since I started taking better care of my sewing machine it sews better.

Frida Kahlo’s Birthday Tribute

Frida-Kahlo
Mexican painter Frida Kahlo
I have always admired Frida Kahlo’s  work, but admit I knew very little about her life and art other than her beautiful recognizable face.  So I decided to join the event at Sewing On My Kitchen Table  to celebrate her birthday by making something that captures the style and spirit of Frida Kahlo.
I began by finding a image and a thought provoking quote  I liked to create a journal page. I traced the image  on fabric and filled in with colored pencils.

100_1100

Her thick eyebrows were her trademark

She wore elaborate hairdos with braids and flowers.

She painted self-portraits surrounded by her pets

Now these cat-eyed glasses  above  are what Frida wore, but I believe she could Rock these heart -shaped glasses that I embellished.

Dia de Muertos---- Spanish for Day of the Dead a Mexican holiday that celebrates family and friends who have died.  I think this cuff braclet I made would also be a part of her wardrobe.

That's all Right

The 60th anniversary of Elvis Presley's  first rock and roll recording in Memphis  is all the buzz. On July 5th 1954 he was 19 years old and on that day recorded "That's All Right". That day changed his life forever when he went on to become the King of Rock and Roll.

To celebrate this  historic event I made this Elvis pillow cover.  It  is in my  etsy shop here

Note this is for a pillow cover only, you will need to purchase the insert .

I have 2 14 inch pillow covers available for immediate shipping and have enough fabric to make several more.

Hey you Elvis fans step back in time and listen to "That's Alright Mama and for information about other events go to Elvisweek.com

Memphis Rocks (a special blog post)

Historically Memphis gets it's name after the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile river. Founded in 1819 by John Overton, James Winchester, and Andrew Jackson,  Memphis has it going on  many ways.

One of the Best things about Memphis is the Food.

Most agree that our Barbecue ribs are #1

And we have a place in Music History.

Known as the "Home of the Blues" and the birthplace of  Rock and Roll.

We have a place in Sports too. We bleed blue with our UofM Tigers
And a "hunk of burnin" love for our Grizzlies
I am proud to say I live in Memphis. Memphis Rocks.

Peace, love, and art.

I'm bacccck to Blogging

I've managed to get a lot done and feel less stressful. Every box (and there were many) bag, room, and closet at the home house have been emptied as well as my head. I still need to clear the garage though. I admit there have been some scary moments and please excuse me for leaving so quickly.  I have a book that I have been working on that I am  excited about.  And also  been contemplating my future at this stage of my life. I really enjoy blogging and sharing my art and thank you very much.

Following are some crafty pictures
